Warlocks in 1965

This is somewhere in Palo Alto in 1965. These lads were pretty raw but they had spirit and a lot of energy. I dont know who was younger Bobby or Billy. Pig was only 19 and they were like 17. Jerry and Phil were 23 or 24. I was the old man at the show at 29. I had short hair and was just out of the Airforce by about 6 months.

Pig where was this? do you know the hall?

Comments:
Foggy, I would love to see this scanned just a little bit bigger. But I really can't hep with the hall. I was living in SF at the time. We were hearing a lot about The Warlocks, but I hadn't seen them perform. In San Francisco, the excitement was centered on The Charlatans, whom we all assumed would be the Next Big Thing, and the Jefferson Airplane. They were holding forth at a club on Fillmore called The Matrix and they had a good singer named Marty Balin. This is not to slight Signe Anderson - but Marty had that pop star voice.
I am wondering about your date for this photo. I'm pretty sure that by the Summer of '65 they were already calling themselves The Grateful Deaf. I mean Dead.

This was a snap taken by a guy named Paul Ryan who I sort of knew back in the 60's. The date on the back was March 11 1965. I don't think they changed to the dead until when they started playing at Acid Tests and that was in summer I think or fall.

Sorry pig can't make bigger. It is a contact sheet pic from a old instamatic brownie snap. It's like 2 by 3 inches and its a little bleary to begin with.

I believe 12/10/65 at the Fillmore was the first time they called themselves the Grateful Dead. Earlier that day, Phil "saw" a record in a used record store by another group calling themselves "The Warlocks." So they had to come up with a new name fast. The story goes that Garcia opened a big dictionary (Funk and Wagnell's?) and there on the page, emblazoned in gold, were the words "Grateful Dead." He was high, as were the rest of them. No one ever again saw any records by this mysterious other group called The Warlocks. Bill Graham hated the new name, so they agreed to be advertised as "The Grateful Dead, formerly the Warlocks."

How bizarre...I used to see the Warlocks at some old funky club in Menlo Park in 1965 and I was fooling around hoping to find out the name of the club. Hmmm, if you guys don't know, I will probably never find out! I was in Soquel at the "Barn" for the first Acid Test, tho !
Love Tina
